HowTo: Advantages of Variable Speed for a home use Lathe

The advantages are:-

  1. You can start the drive as often as you like (a single phase motor is limited for the number of starts per hour).
  2. Change the speed to anything from 10% to 200% of 1400RPM (from the drive keypad, potentiometer or the additional remote potentiometer).
  3. Run the motor to 100Hz for 2800RPM at constant power from 1400RPM.
  4. Use a final drive ratio that gives you the highest motor speed for the job on the lathe, then when reducing the speed there will be more torque available.
  5. Step-less Variable Speed allows you to maintain the tool contact velocity for the diameter and keep a good finish.
